Quando lessi "Un Bacio per Ricordare" fu amore a prima lettura! Una storia divertente, ironica, ma anche tormentata e passionale che ha fatto entrare Teresa Medeiros nella rosa delle mie autrici preferite. Non potevo esimermi dal farmi avanti e chiederle se avrebbe risposto a qualche domanda per conoscerla meglio, ed ecco cosa ci ha detto di lei...

1) Do you remember when you discovered the pleasure of reading and with which book?
I actually read THE SHIVERING SANDS, my first Victoria Holt gothic romance, when I was seven years old. I absolutely adored it! Other books I would read over and over were A LITTLE PRINCESS and THE SECRET GARDEN by Frances Hodgson Burnett and the LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE series. When I was 15, I read my first "grown-up" romances--THE FLAME AND THE FLOWER, THE WOLF AND THE DOVE and SWEET SAVAGE LOVE.

- Ricordi quando hai scoperto il piacere della lettura? Con quale libro?
Lessi The Shivering Sands, il mio primo romance gotico di Victoria Holt, quando avevo sette anni. Lo adorai in tutti i sensi! Altri libri che lessi e rilessi furono La Piccola Principessa e Il Giardino Segreto di Frances Hodson Burnett e la serie di Una Casa nella Prateria. Quando avevo 15 anni lessi il miei primi romance adulti: Il Fiore e la Fiamma, Il Lupo e la Colomba (K. E. Woodiwiss) e Dolce Amore Selvaggio (Rosemary Rogers).

2) When and how did you start to write?
I sat down at my mother's kitchen counter when I was 21 and started writing the sort of book I wanted to read. I was too young to know how competitive publishing was so I wasn't really afraid. I finished the book (LADY OF CONQUEST) and studied how to market it. Within 3 months of submitting the manuscript to multiple publishers, I sold the book and signed a 3 book contract.

- Quando e come hai iniziato a scrivere?
Quando avevo 21 anni mi sedetti sul bancone della cucina di mia mamma e iniziai a scrivere il romanzo che avrei voluto leggere. Ero troppo giovane per sapere com'era competitiva l'editoria, così affrontai la cosa senza paura. Finii il libro (Lady of Conquest) e studiai come introdurlo sul mercato. Entro 3 mesi, in cui sottoposi il manoscritto a diversi editori, vendetti il libro e firmai un contratto per altri 3 romanzi.

3) Have you been influenced by certain authors and do you consider some authors as reference/model?
Probably my greatest influences were Frances Hodgson Burnett as a child and Tom and Sharon Curtis who wrote several romances under the pen name "Laura London" in the 80's. I tend to love lyrical language and writing style and they had it in abundance. I was also heavily influenced by Julie Garwood and Judith McNaught's early historicals and the sheer variety of Jude Deveraux's whimsical stories.

- Ci sono autori di riferimento, modelli che ti hanno influenzata o segnata?
Probabilmente a influenzarmi maggiormente furono Frances Hodgson Burnett da bambina e poi Tom e Sharon Curtis, che negli anni '80 scrissero molti romanzi con lo pseudonimo di Laura London. Tendo ad amare un linguaggio e uno stile di scrittura lirico e loro ne avevano in abbondanza. Fui fortemente influenzata anche da Julie Garwood, dal primo storico di Judith McNaught e dalla varietà pura e semplice, delle storie capricciose di Jude Deveraux.

4)Do you have a favorite moment for writing? When is it?
There is nothing that can compare with finishing a book. It gives you an incredible rush of emotion--sheer joy plus a bittersweet sense of completion. When I'm writing, I try to keep regular hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. but when I'm on deadline, I also write nights and weekends, which makes me very productive.

- Hai un momento preferito per scrivere? Quand'è?
Non c'è niente che può essere paragonabile al terminare un romanzo. Ti dà un'incredibile emozione, una gioia pura e semplice più un senso agrodolce di completezza.
Quando scrivo cerco di mantenere orari regolari, dalle 9 di mattina alle 3 del pomeriggio, ma quando sto per terminare un romanzo scrivo anche notti e fine settimana interi, che si rivelano molto produttivi.

5) How do you think of your stories and characters?
I usually come up with the characters' names first, then the characters themselves. I'm a writer who needs a "big plot" to act as the skeleton of my story. Once I come up with the story, then I decide what time period and setting would act as the best "frame" for that story.
Anything can inspire the beginning of a story--a snippet of overheard conversation, a piece of music, watching a movie or TV show and thinking, "I would have done it THAT way."

- Da dove nascono le tue storie e i tuoi personaggi?
Solitamente nascono prima i nomi dei personaggi, poi i loro caratteri. Sono una scrittrice che ha bisogno di una "grande trama" da organizzare come scheletro per la mia storia. Una volta nata la storia decido il periodo storico che servirà da cornice per l'intero libro.
Qualsiasi cosa può ispirare l'inizio di una storia: un frammento di conversazione udita per caso, un brano musicale, il guardare un film o un programma Tv e pensare, "Io avrei fatto così".

6) Is there a character that resembles you?
Oh definitely Lottie Fairleigh from ONE NIGHT OF SCANDAL! She's a writer, she's very nosy, and she has an insatiable appetite for sweets and kittens.

- C'è un personaggio che ti somiglia?
Oh, sicuramente Lottie Fairleigh di Una Notte di Scandalo! E' una scrittrice, è molto curiosa e ha un'insaziabile predilezione per i dolci e i gattini.

7) In "One Night of Scandal " you talked about a disease which is often underestimated, but very serious, how did you research about it?
I've been researching bipolar disorder (manic-depressive disease) all of my life because my mom is bipolar. She had her first major manic episode right after I was born. One of the best books I've ever read on the subject was A BRILLIANT MADNESS by Patty Duke. ONE NIGHT OF SCANDAL was a very personal book for me because I recognized elements of my own struggle with my mom's illness in Hayden and Allegra, especially the tendency to blame yourself when someone you love is sick.

- In Una Notte da Scandalo tratti il tema di una malattia spesso sottovalutata, ma molto seria, come ti sei documentata in merito?
Ho fatto ricerche sul disturbo bipolare (malattia maniaco-depressiva) tutta la vita, perchè mia mamma è bipolare. Ha avuto il suo primo grave episodio dopo che sono nata io. Uno dei migliori libri che abbia mai letto sull'aromento è "A Brilliant Madness" di Patty Duke. Una Notte di Scandalo fu un libro molto intimo per me, perchè si riconoscono elementi della mia lotta personale con la malattia di mia mamma in Hayden e Allegra, specialmente la tendenza a biasimarsi quando qualcuno che ami è ammalato.

8) What brought you to write paranormal romance?
I've always enjoyed a touch of whimsy in my books. I published my first two paranormals BREATH OF MAGIC and TOUCH OF ENCHANTMENT in 1996 and 1997. That was back when time travel stories were popular and I was thrilled to be able to tell mine. When vampires became popular in the U.S., I thought, "Oh goody! Now I can tell my vampire stories!" I like to add a lot of humor to the genre and not look at it totally seriously. One of my favorite combined genres is humor and horror a la BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. If you can scare me and make me laugh at the same time, I'm yours forever!

- Cosa ti ha portato a scrivere romance paranormali?
Mi sono sempre divertita a dare un tocco di originalità ai miei libri. Ho pubblicato i miei primi due paranormali, "Breath of Magic" e "Touch of Enchantment" nel 1996 e 1997. Andavano di moda le storie con viaggi nel tempo e mi entusiasmai per essere stata capace di dire la mia. Quando i vampiri divennero popolari negli Stati Uniti pensai "Oh bello! Adesso posso raccontare le mie storie di vampiri!" Mi piace aggiungere molto umorismo al genere senza prenderlo troppo seriamente. Una delle mie combinazioni preferite del genere, con umorismo e horror, è rappresentata da Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Se puoi speventarmi e farmi ridere allo stesso tempo, sarò tua per sempre!

9) In Italy we have read "After Midnight" and now we are waiting for "The Vampire Who Loved Me". Will it be the last of the series?
Yes, I always conceived those books as a "duet". But I never say never! I've always said that if I run out of ideas, I'll go back and write books for all of the children of my characters :) I hope you enjoy finding out what happened in the crypt between Portia and Julian. I know I enjoyed writing it! ;)

- In Italia abbiamo letto "Dopo Mezzanotte" e ora stiamo aspettando "The Vampire Who Loved Me". Sarà l'ultimo ella serie?
Sì, ho sempre concepito questa serie come un "duetto". Ma mai dire mai! Ho sempre detto che se dovessi restare a corto di idee, inizierò a scrivere libri dedicati ai figli dei miei personaggi :) Spero che vi divertiate a scoprire quello che accadde nella cripta tra Portia e Julian. Scriverlo fu un vero piacere! ;)

10) Will you continue to write paranormal romance?
I may definitely return to paranormal in the future but my next book will be a straight historical.

- Continuerai a scrivere romance paranormali?
Sicuramente in futuro tornerò al paronarmale, ma il mio prossimo romanzo sarà di diritto uno storico.

11) What are you writing now?
I just finished my next book, which is a Scottish Regency-set historical with a very naughty hero. My heroine Catriona Kincaid is a damsel in need of a champion but fate forces her to deliver her precious quest into the mercenary hands of Sir Simon Wescott, a cynical rake whose quicksilver tongue is equally adept at witty repartee and intoxicating kisses.

- Cosa stai scrivendo in questo momento?
Ho appena finito il mio ultimo libro, che è uno storico ambientato durante la Reggenza Scozzese, con un eroe molto birichino. La mia eroina, Catriona Kincaid è una damigella in cerca di un "campione", ma il destino la costringe a trasferire la sua preziosa ricerca nelle avide mani di Sir Simon Wescott, un cinico libertino la cui lingua tagliente è ugualmente abile sia nelle repliche mordaci che nei baci inebrianti.

12) What books would you bring with yourself on a desert island?
The Bible, THE WINDFLOWER by Tom and Sharon Curtis, the HARRY POTTER series

- Che libri porteresti su un'isola deserta?
La Bibbia, The Windflower di Tom and Sharon Curtis, e la serie di Harry Potter.
