Lorraine Heath is an author I like very much, I love all her novels and it seemed rightful to me to make her my compliments. I wrote her if I could ask her some questions and after a few minutes she answered me "I'd be thrilled to answer your questions."
I can't tell you the joy... this is the result of our virtual conversation!

1) Do you remember when you discovered the pleasure of reading and with which book?
Oh, yes, the true pleasure of reading happened quite late in life for me actually. It was LaVyrle Spencer’s Morning Glory. Before that moment I wasn’t much of a reader and I certainly would never read romance.
I had to go out of town on business and was looking for something to read on the plane. The book was on the bestseller shelves and it had flowers on the cover and I thought the blurb sounded interesting. Before I returned from my trip, I realized it was a romance—and romance wasn’t at all what I thought it was—and I had read it three times. I was hooked on the genre. And I knew I wanted to write stories that touched the heart as that one did.

- Ricordi quando hai scoperto il piacere della lettura? Con quale libro?
Oh sì, la vera scoperta del piacere di leggere è avvenuta abbastanza tardi nella mia vita. È stato con Morning Glory (Giorni di Gloria) di LaVyrle Spencer. Prima di allora non ero una grande lettrice e certamente non leggevo romance.
Dovevo andare fuori città per lavoro e stavo cercando qualcosa da leggere sull’aereo. 2) Have you been influenced by certain authors and do you consider some authors as reference/model?
I have always admired LaVyrle Spencer’s writing. I keep books on my keeper shelf that I turn to when I’m looking for what I consider the best in romance.
Besides, Ms. Spencer’s works, I have Wild at Heart by Patricia Gaffney, The Proposition by Judith Ivory, Blue Skies by Catherine Anderson, The Spiral Path by Mary Jo Putney, to name a few.

- Ci sono autori di riferimento, modelli che ti hanno influenzata o segnata?
Ho sempre ammirato la scrittura di LaVyrle Spencer. Tengo dei libri sul mio scaffale preferito a cui mi rivolgo quando cerco quello che considero il meglio del romance.

3) When and how did you start to write?
I’ve always written: journals, long letters, technical books. I started seriously writing novels in 1990. I took a long weekend and just wrote. It was an 80-page draft, was horrible but it did have a beginning, middle, and end plus a bit of conflict and I thought, “I can do this. I can write a story.” Of course, it’ll never get published, but it was a start.

- Quando e come hai cominciato a scrivere?
Ho sempre scritto: diari, lunghe lettere, libri tecnici. Ho cominciato a scrivere seriamente dei romanzi nel 1990. Mi ero presa un lungo weekend e avevo semplicemente scritto. Ne venne una bozza di 80 pagine, orribile ma aveva un inizio, una metà, una fine, un po’ di conflitto e così pensai “Posso farlo. 4) Do you have a favorite moment for writing? When is it?
My favorite time to write is late at night or very early in the morning, when the house is quiet and dark. I put on my thunderstorm CD and slip away into the world of my imagination.

5) How do you think of your stories and characters?
Usually while doing research for a story the spark for another story will be planted.
For example, when researching how to treat gunshot wounds for a story I was writing in 1993, I ran across information about the devastating and disfigured facial wounds suffered by soldiers during the Civil War. The seed was planted for Texas Destiny, the story of a disfigured and isolated man who has to escort his brother’s mail order bride on a three-week journey back to the ranch and falls in love with her along the way. -

- Da dove nascono le tue storie e i tuoi personaggi?
Solitamente mentre sto facendo ricerche per una storia si pianta il seme per un’altra.

6) For example, Rhys (Love with a Scandalous Lord) and Camilla (As An Earl Desires) are two perfect unusual heroes, with a very difficult past. Where have you found the inspiration for these beautiful characters so out of the ordinary?
Thank you so much for the kind words!
For Rhys, while doing research on Victorian sexuality, I ran across information that indicated women at the time went to what was basically a male prostitute to lose their virginity before marriage. And I thought it had the potential for a great story. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find the reference when I got ready to write the book, and Rhys changed into someone who was servicing unhappy married ladies.
At the time, I wrote his story, I had no idea how complex Camilla was, but she fascinated me with her aloofness and her selfishness and I began to wonder why she was that way.
As strange as it seems, very often, I don’t know why my characters do the things they do. I go to that well of creativity and simply write what comes to me. Sometimes, it all works out. By the time I got to the end of Rhys’s story, I realized that Camilla had a heart-breaking past that had made her the way she was. And she deserved a hero.

- Per esempio, Rhys (Un Amore Scandaloso) e Camilla (Desiderio) sono due perfetti anti-eroi, con un passato molto difficile. Dove hai trovato l'ispirazione per questi bellissimi personaggi, così fuori dal comune?

Per quanto riguarda Rhys, mentre facevo delle ricerche sulla sessualità in epoca vittoriana sono venuta a conoscenza del fatto che in quel periodo c'erano donne che andavano da una sorta di “prostituta uomo” (un gigolò, n.d.t.) per perdere la verginità prima del matrimonio. Ho pensato che in questo potesse esserci il potenziale per una grande storia. Sfortunatamente non sono riuscita a trovare un riferimento preciso quando ero pronta a scrivere la storia, e Rhys divenne qualcuno “al servizio” di donne sposate e infelici.
Ai tempi in cui scrissi la storia non avevo idea di quanto fosse complessa Camilla, ma mi affascinava per il suo distacco ed egoismo e cominciai a domandarmi perché fosse così.
Per quanto strano possa sembrare spesso non so perché i miei personaggi fanno le cose che fanno. Si accende la lampadina della creatività e io scrivo quello che mi viene in mente. A volte funziona. Quando sono arrivata alla fine della storia di Rhys, ho realizzato che Camilla aveva avuto un terribile passato che l’aveva resa la persona che era. E si meritava un eroe.

7) Besides, you always have very nice ideas to give a particular touch to the history, as the use of the roller skate in As An Earl Desires, where do you find the inspiration?
I do a lot of research and I love the little trivial details of ordinary life, so I’m usually marking passages as something to use later. I’d actually wanted to have them out riding bicycles but bicycles at the time that my story was set hadn’t yet developed into a style that a lady could ride, so I was looking for something they could do that would be fun and different—and I ran across the fact that roller skating was gaining in popularity at the time and I decided it would be fun.

- Tra l'altro, hai sempre idee molto carine per caratterizzare le storie, come l'uso dei pattini in Desiderio, dove trovi l'ispirazione?
Faccio molte ricerche e mi piacciono molto i futili dettagli della vita ordinaria, così spesso mi segno dei passaggi da poter utilizzare in seguito. 8) Do you feel a particular bond with some of your characters and why?
I feel a special bond with all my characters. They come to me with stories to tell, and I’m humbled to write them and try to do them justice. I always worry that I’ve let the characters down, that I could have told their stories better. I have no idea where they come from or why. I only know I have stories to write.

- Senti un particolare legame con qualcuno dei suoi personaggi, e perché?
Io ho un legame particolare con tutti i miei personaggi. Arrivano da me con le loro storie da raccontare e io umilmente mi propongo di scriverle e di far loro giustizia. 9) Do you think there is a way to learn to write or tell a story, or is it something you are born with?
I think there are people who have the gift and are natural storytellers. But I also believe that if someone wants to be a storyteller, she can learn how to write a story in a compelling manner. She just has to dedicate herself to learning the craft.

- Ritieni che ci sia un modo per imparare a scrivere o raccontare una storia, oppure è qualcosa con cui si nasce?

10) Do you have any advice for an aspiring writer?
Write what you love to read.

11) What kind of relationship you have with the foreign translations of your books?
I don’t hear from many of the readers of my foreign translations; I’m assuming that sometimes there is the language barrier. You’re the first to actually ask me for an interview. I’m so honored.

I just finished reading Samantha James’ The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell, and I absolutely loved it.

13) And... what are you writing now?
I’m writing In Bed With the Devil, which will be released in June 2008. But until I get it finished, I need to keep the story close to my heart. If I start talking about it before I’m finished then I’ll lose the urgency to write it.

Sto scrivendo “In bed with the devil” che verrà pubblicato a giugno del 2008. Ma finché non lo avrò finito ho bisogno di tenermi stretta la storia. Se comincio a parlarne prima di averla finita, perdo l’urgenza di scriverla.

14) What books would you bring with yourself on a desert island?
I would grab whatever I could from my To-Be-Read stack and hopefully discover some new favorites.
